As a leader, Philippa communicated clear values to which she consistently adhered and empowered others to take difficult decisions. For nearly 25 years in a variety of commercial, strategic and risk roles at Barclays, Philippa developed a strong financial and strategic background. Building on her degree in Mathematics, she assumed multiple risk roles, such as responsibility for Barclays’ UK’s personal sector credit risk policy for consumer and mortgage portfolios. Her final roles, as Global Risk Director, allowed her firsthand experience of international regulation and implementing governance frameworks across multiple jurisdictions.
As Group Conduct Risk Director with Legal & General (L&G), Philippa developed a reputation for her forward-thinking approach to the Group’s conduct risk management model and for ensuring business models evolved in a timely way to meet changing regulatory expectations. The role required the development and maintenance of effective regulatory relationships and strong relationships with the PLC Board. She sponsored L&G’s programme to increase gender diversity and was an influential member of the CSR committee.
Since retiring from Legal & General, Philippa has focused on developing a plural set of interests both in the commercial and voluntary sectors; her mentoring of current and future leaders comprises a key component of her portfolio, alongside various strategic consultancy assignments.
Philippa currently provides first line advice and guidance to parents in relation to specific concerns about the mental health of their children through a national charity.

Philippa has taken part in formal mentoring programmes at Barclays and Legal & General, supporting both women-specific programmes and more general programmes for high potential individuals.
In addition, as a high-profile female executive, Philippa was regularly sort out by individuals to act as an informal mentor. Philippa has also become an on-going mentor to several former team members.
Awards and recognition
Philippa was an influential member of the ABI Conduct Committee and is well known throughout the Conduct Risk community. Her lobbying activity on the role of FOS led to her being invited to join a working group, led by the Treasury, on an industry issue.
