Oh dear! Six years after our last survey on accents we went to the nation again. Around three hundred business people from mainly FTSE 350 and AIM list companies responded to our survey and although we may have thrown away our ties in a bid to assure people it’s what goes on inside our heads which really matters it appears our attitudes to what comes out of them remain unchanged and our prejudices on accents have, if anything, hardened.
It’s the American and Home Counties accent which come out on top for perceived success and reliability and the Brummie and Scouse accents coming out bottom with an even great percentage of people expressing almost a hostility to them. Cue, local radio stations in the Midland and Liverpool ringing me up to remonstrate. I shall, of course respond, in measure tones in my best RP (Received Pronunciation)!
